Syokimau Water Supply
What Syokimau Needs To Know
Access to reliable, clean water remains one of the most pressing needs for households across Syokimau. This week brought an encouraging development. The County Government of Machakos, working with the Tana Athi Water Works Development Agency (TAWWDA) and other stakeholders, held a consultative meeting at East African Portland Sports Club to review the proposed Mavoko Water Supply Project.
Phase I: Syokimau, Mlolongo and Katani
The meeting focused on Phase I of the project, which will cover three areas: Syokimau, Mlolongo and Katani. The plan includes about 52 kilometres of pipeline across the three areas. Once complete, the project is expected to benefit approximately 150,000 residents through improved access to reliable water supplies.
The proposed timeline
Stakeholders reviewed an implementation schedule made up of three stages:
- Procurement: 2 months
- Construction: 12 months
- Defects liability period: 6 months
The defects liability period is the stage after construction when the contractor remains responsible for fixing any faults in the completed works.
Beyond Phase I
The discussions also looked ahead. Stakeholders talked about preparations for Phase II, which will extend coverage to areas that Phase I does not serve. The Quarry Road component will be financed separately through the affordable housing scheme.
The County’s commitment
Representing the County Government, MACWASCO CEO Hon. Paul Museku spoke on behalf of the CECM for Water, Hon. Onesmas Kuyu. He reaffirmed the County’s commitment, under H.E. Governor Wavinya Ndeti, EGH, to working closely with TAWWDA and other partners. The aim is to support implementation and expand water and sewer services across Mavoko.
What happens next
For residents, this is a promising step, but it is still a proposal under review. SRA will keep following the project closely and share updates as they become available, so that residents stay informed about timelines, progress and any actions required of them.
