SRA Joins Forces With NACADA Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Fighting alcohol and drug abuse is rarely a job for one group alone — it takes a coalition of neighbors, law enforcement, and specialized agencies working toward the same goal. That was the spirit behind a recent meeting held at the Gateway Mall SRA Office, where the Syokimau Residents Association (SRA) security team came together with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the National Police Service, and local administration to tackle substance abuse in Syokimau and its surrounding area
Having this mix of voices in one room ensured the discussion reflected both the realities faced by residents and the operational challenges faced by law enforcement.
Why the Meeting Was Called
The session was organized around three central goals:
- Identifying better strategies for fighting drug abuse in the area
- Understanding the challenges that affect both the community and law enforcement officers in addressing the problem
- Strengthening cooperation between residents and law enforcement to build a more unified front against substance abuse.
What Was Agreed
After lengthy deliberation, the group settled on four key resolutions to guide the way forward:
1. Closer scrutiny of liquor license registration. Security members agreed to be more vigilant when liquor licenses are being registered, helping to ensure that outlets operating in the area meet the required standards.SRA shall engage the county for inclusion at the liquor licensing process where residents must have a voice representing the interests of the neighborhood.
2. Community sensitization led by NACADA. The NACADA team will lead awareness efforts to educate residents on the dangers of drugs and substance abuse. SRA shall mobilize residents to rally behind the security team and NACADA in this endavour.
3. Seminars targeting young people. Recognizing that youth are especially vulnerable to substance abuse, the group agreed to organize seminars specifically designed to reach and educate young people in the community.
4. Establishment of a rehabilitation center. It is evident that a public facility of this nature to support those already struggling with addiction is very necessary; long-term plans were made to create a local rehabilitation center offering a path to recovery. Lobbying for this to start as soon as possible.
Looking Ahead
This meeting marks an important step toward a more coordinated response to drug and alcohol abuse in Syokimau. By bringing together security agencies, government bodies, and community leadership, the resolutions reached aim not just to enforce the law, but to educate, prevent, and rehabilitate — building a safer and healthier community for everyone.
