A Victory for Syokimau

How Our Community Took Back Our Roads

For far too long, the peaceful streets of Syokimau Estate were under siege. Our community, a place we’ve invested in and call home, became an unauthorized bypass for overloaded trucks from a major local quarry. These vehicles, seeking to avoid the Mlolongo weighbridge, turned our residential roads into a high-speed, high-risk thoroughfare.

The consequences of this impunity were severe and multifaceted:

  1. Road Destruction: Our estate roads, designed for cars and families, were being pulverized by axle weights they were never meant to bear, causing rapid deterioration and wasting our tax-funded investments.
  2. Health Hazards: The constant stream of trucks brought with it unbearable levels of dust, noise, and smoke, negatively impacting our air quality and peace.
  3. Risk to Life: This was not just an inconvenience; it was a deadly danger. Tragically, a resident lost her life after being hit by one of these speeding trucks—a heartbreaking event that highlighted the urgent need for change.
  4. Economic Damage: Beyond the government’s loss of revenue from avoided weighbridge fees, this situation threatened our property values and the very security of our neighborhood.

After countless appeals to the government road agency, KURA, yielded insufficient action, we, the residents, made a decision: we would protect our infrastructure, our health, and our safety ourselves.

Our Community’s Triumph

We petitioned for and received permission from KURA to install a barrier under their supervision. This barrier was to be placed at the white house corner. A position at which it would protect the entire Syokimau Roads. KURA supported us on this, and this was a huge win—a testament to the power of a united community standing up for its rights. For now, sanity has been restored to all our roads in Syokimau. Residents in the entire estate have witnessed a disappearance of trucks from our roads.

The Battle Isn’t Over: We Need Your Support

However, our work is not done. We have been warned that truck operators, who have destroyed barriers before, are intent on doing so again. We are committed to protecting this solution by all legal means.

To ensure this hard-won victory is permanent, we are raising funds to employ official, professional security personnel to guard the barrier around the clock. This is a critical next step in our ongoing fight to preserve the safety and integrity of Syokimau.

This is a continuous battle, and we cannot tire. We are immensely grateful to KURA for their partnership thus far and are hopeful it will continue.

Let’s protect our victory together. Let’s keep Syokimau safe.
